Nigel Birchwood, age 8, won a contest sponsored by Inspector Spacetime Magazine in 1978. The magazine urged readers to submit original designs for monsters. The winner was to see his design realized by the actual prop and costume makers from the show for a photo opportunity.
That was to be the end of it, but when controversial producer Nathaniel Williams-Bliss saw the Splorgh (above) he insisted on writing an Inspector Spacetime episode around the creature. The Slorgh's onscreen appearance was lackluster, however. It was described by one critic as looking like "a children's novelty eraser".
